Metro Detroit companies win $10K in Comcast competition
Two of the 32 businesses from across the country that were awarded Comcast Business grants for $10,000 are from the Metro Detroit area.
Fresh Co Home Inc. in Bloomfield, and Lawrence Hunt in Royal Oak, are two of the regional winners in Comcast’s Innovations 4 Entrepreneurs program, a national competition that will award more than $600,000 to entrepreneurs and startups.
Each of the regional winners will have a chance to continue on to compete for an additional $20,000. Public voting for the competition is underway and continues until May 10. The 32 winners will be narrowed down to six grand prize winners who will be awarded the cash and get a trip to Comcast Business headquarters in Philadelphia where they will get one-on-one business consulting with business experts.
The experts include celebrity chef Robert Irvine, Wharton entrepreneurship lecturer and DreamIt Ventures’ Director Patrick Fitzgerald, Comcast Chief Development Officer Sam Schwartz, and Managing Director of Comcast Ventures Louis Toth.
Applicants had to send in a 250-word essay describing how they would use the funds.
Fresh Co Home Inc. is a building company that provides home improvement services like painting, roofing, siding and gutters. In the essay the company submitted for the competition, CEO Jon Ruggeri and Director of Operations Pablo Ortega said they wanted to develop an app to allow clients to track the progress of their projects and for employees to keep track of to-do lists.
Lawrence Hunt is a “professional performance” clothing brand that began as a Kickstarter project to fund a sweat-resistant dress shirt. The shirts are sold through a website lawrencehunt.co.
In his essay, founder Jeff Schattner said he would use the money to grow their product line and support production and delivery. Schattner said he wants to provide customers with an app that can assess exactly what size shirt they should be ordering online and to allow for a process where customers can touch and feel the product before buying it.
