The holidays are coming with ribbons, coming with tags, coming with packages, boxes and bags — which means the United Parcel Service needs help.

UPS is hiring 850 seasonal workers this holiday season in Metro Detroit. Nationwide, the Atlanta-based company expects to bring on 100,000 additional workers for the late fall and early winter, as it prepares for another record peak season.

On average, the company delivers 20 million packages a day. It expects that to double for the holiday season, Jim Barber, UPS chief operating officer, said in a statement.

Full- and part-time positions as well as flexible shifts are available from November to January. Jobs include package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers.

Wages for tractor-trailer and package car drivers start at $21 per hour. Pay for package handlers starts at $14 per hour and $15 for driver-helpers.

More than a third of seasonal hires land permanent positions at the company after the holidays, according to a news release. David Abney, the company's chairman and CEO, began as a part-time worker.

Eligible seasonal employees who work continuously for three months also can earn up to $1,300 toward college expenses.
