One of the world's largest clothing stores is opening its first Detroit location just in time for holiday season shopping.

H&M will debut its 25,000-square-foot shop Nov. 21 at 1505 Woodward at Clifford. The store will sell clothing for men, women and children, plus accessories.

“As Bedrock’s largest retail tenant, H&M signals a tipping point for the historic Woodward Shopping District," said Bedrock CEO Matt Cullen in a statement. "For the first time in decades, shopping for the whole family is available on our main thoroughfare, and there is much more to come. This global brand will fit perfectly with the local businesses, tech companies, startups and fellow fashion industry leaders that already call Woodward home."

He said Bedrock looks forward to "continuing the momentum" that a store like H&M represents.

Detroit's H&M, which will create 20 jobs, will open one week before Thanksgiving. The first 500 customers in line will get an H&M "Access to Fashion Pass," which is worth between $10 and $500. Customers after the first 500 will get a $10 pass.

In its efforts to be more sustainable, H&M has a garment collection program that re-purposes and recycles used clothing. Anyone who contributes to the program at the Detroit store on opening day can enter to win a gift card.

Founded in Sweden in 1947, H&M was named by Forbes as one of the country's best employers for diversity this year. This comes after backlash in 2018 involving an ad featuring a hoodie with the text "coolest monkey in the jungle" on a young model who is a person of color. The retailer appeared to swiftly move past the scandal.

In September the company vowed to suspend buying leather from Brazil due to the fires in the rain forest.

There are 18 other H&M stores in Michigan, including Twelve Oaks Mall, Lakeside Mall, Oakland Mall, Fairlane Town Center, Macomb Mall and Laurel Park Place.

The Woodward location will be open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. Call the store at (855) 466-7467. Anyone interested in working at the Detroit H&M can visit
