Study: Subaru WRX, Pontiac GTO among most-ticketed cars
Drivers of the Subaru WRX, Pontiac GTO and Scion FR-S are more likely to be ticketed than drivers of any other cars in the United States, according to a study released Tuesday by Insurance.com.
The California-based car insurance comparison website reports that one out of every three owners of those vehicles — about 33 percent — reported having a traffic violation in the last three years. For all models, 19.9 percent of drivers reported having a traffic violation — usually speeding, but also offenses such as failure to yield and drunken driving.
"It's not about horsepower," said Insurance.com managing editor Des Toups. "The Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R rank well below average for tickets even though they can easily double the highest speed limits. But those cars are also costly, so their buyers tend to be older and take fewer risks."
The most-ticketed brand overall was Scion, with 27.5 percent of all owners reporting a traffic violation over the past three years. Besides the GTO, other vehicles from Detroit automakers included the Mercury Topaz, Pontiac G8 and Saturn Aura. All four vehicles are discontinued.
Insurance.com looked at data from 526 models and more than 557,000 recent customers to determine the top-ticketed vehicles.
