Washington — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified on Friday the makes and models of 12 million cars and motorcycles that have been recalled because of defective air bag inflators made by Japanese supplier Takata.

The action includes 4.3 million Chryslers; 4.5 million Hondas; 1.6 million Toyotas; 731,000 Mazdas; 402,000 Nissans; 383,000 Subarus; 38,000 Mitsubishis; and 2,800 Ferraris.

The agency said the recalls are being conducted in phases, with priority given to vehicles that were sold in states with high temperatures and humidity, such as Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) and the U.S. Virgin Islands, known collectively as Zone A.

Less priority is being placed on fixing cars sold in states with more moderate temperatures and humidity, such as Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, known collectively as Zone B.

Finally, the lowest priority is being given to cars sold in cooler states, including Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming, known as Zone C.

The cars identified Friday were included in NHTSA’s recall of defective air bag inflators that doubled last month to include approximately 35 million to 40 million more of the faulty parts.

The decision to recall more air bags after an initial recall of 28 million was announced after the safety agency confirmed the cause behind the inflators’ propensity to rupture, especially in humid climates. Flying shrapnel from exploding Takata inflators has been tied to 10 deaths and more than 100 injuries in the United States, and at least one more death outside the U.S.

Analysts have said it could take years for all of the air bags to be replaced. Some have questioned whether Takata can survive the latest blow.

Some of the vehicles that were identified on Friday were already included in the initial recall because of problems with their driver side air bags.
