Upgrades available for new Charger, older Corvettes
You like your car. In fact, you like it a lot. You just want to make it better. Better for you and for the way you drive. Each week we try to share news with you about ways to, as we put it, Soup It Up. Here are two recent kits that can enhance your driving experience, at least if your car is a 2015 Dodge Charger R/T or a third-generation Chevrolet Corvette:
Performance in a Box
So you bought your 2015 Charger R/T with its 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine that pumps out 370 horsepower and a stunning 395 pound-feet of torque. But, well, now you think even more power would be nice to have.
And now there’s a solution. Mopar, the parts and accessories arm of FCA, is offering a limited edition of 50 performance kits for the 2015 Charger R/T. And this is, quite literally, a kit that comes in its own custom-made wooden crate.
Inside that crate is a street-legal performance package that includes a Scat Pack Performance Stage Kit 1 — Mopar Performance cat-back exhaust, cold-air intake, Stage 1 premium fuel powertrain control module and high-flow oil filter — plus front strut tower brace with caps, bright pedal kit and special door sill overlays, matte-black Mopar ’15 graphics and a serialized Mopar ’15 dash badge, Mopar Performance fender badge, Mopar magnetic mechanic’s tray, owner’s kit, certificate of authenticity, vintage replica Scat Pack poster.
Oh, and don’t throw away the crate. It’s labeled and numbered and someday is sure to become a collector’s item.
Install the parts included in the box and you get an extra 18 horsepower as well as 18 more pound-feet of torque.
Previously offered were similar Performance in a Box kits for the 2010 Dodge challenger, 2011 Charger, 2012 Chrysler 300, 2013 Dodge Dart and 2014 Challenger.
The price for the Performance in a Box package for the 2015 Charger is $3,500. That may seem a lot until you consider that the 2015 Charger R/T Scat Pack model costs $7,000 more than your 2015 R/T. Of course, that full Scat Pack version comes with a larger and more powerful Hemi V8 and Brembo brakes.
Nonetheless, you may not feel you need of the 485 horsepower in that more expensive model. Plus with the Mopar Performance in a Box, you can claim owning one of only 50 Chargers so equipped.
Corvette seat upgrade kit
While there are only 50 such Performance in a Box kits being made available, there are hundreds if not thousands of third-generation Chevrolet Corvettes still on the road. Now, a special seat upgrade kit allows those owners of those cars to equipped them with seats like those in the C5 or C6 Corvette.
Mid America Motorworks is based in Effingham, Illinois, and specializes in two vehicles at seemingly opposite ends of the automotive spectrum — air-cooled Volkswagens and high-performance Corvettes.
The third-generation Corvette was produced from 1968-82. For $249.99, Mid America has developed a locally produced a billet aluminum seat adapter package so seats designed for the 1997-2011 Corvette models can be used in earlier cars. The newer seats not only are designed to be more comfortable, but also to provide better support.
The $249.99 price includes adapters for both the driver’s and passenger’s seats, but not the seats themselves. But those also are available.
