Second of 8 stolen Ram pickups recovered
Two of the eight new 2018 Ram 1500 pickups stolen in a dramatic heist from a Warren truck plant Thursday have been located.
The first was located through a GPS signal from the truck’s navigation system,Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said Friday evening. Detroit police found it at Outer Drive and Conant Street on the city’s northeast side and notified Warren police Friday morning.
The second, he said, was recovered through a tip received by the Warren Police Department that it was parked behind an abandoned house on Monica Street in Detroit.
Dwyer said the red Ram 1500 found on the northeast side wasn’t damaged. “I believe the suspects were headed to Detroit to some warehouse, and in my opinion it was abandoned because it ran out of gas,” he said.
An FCA spokesperson said Friday that if the trucks had navigation capabilities installed, then Fiat Chrysler has the ability to track them. They would not say if the six remaining Ram pickups were equipped with navigation systems.
The Warren Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for tips leading to the recovery of the trucks, which are worth around $30,000 each. Dwyer said he was not sure if reward money was being distributed to the tipster.
The thefts happened early Thursday morning at the shipping yard next to the Warren Truck Assembly Plant at Mound Road and Nine Mile. Dwyer said police received a 911 call from a truck plant security employee at about 4 a.m. She told dispatch she was in a security booth at the plant’s west gate when a new pickup awaiting shipment crashed through the gate and was followed by the other pickups, Dwyer said.
Police believe the thieves arrived at the shipping yard in a 2003 Ram pickup that had been reported stolen earlier in Warren. It appears they parked the truck near the storage lot’s chain-link fence, cut through it to gain access and entered on foot through the hole. They then got into the new pickups and crashed through the gate for their escape.
The convoy of stolen trucks was last seen traveling south on Mound Road.
Warren police are working with the Macomb County Auto Theft unit in the investigation. Fiat Chrysler said it is cooperating fully.
