New 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe debuts in New York

Hyundai Motor America on Wednesday debuted its all-new 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe at the New York auto show.

The midsize SUV goes on sale this summer in the U.S. It gets a diesel option and tweaks to the body that give it a more athletic stance.

The base model for the Santa Fe is a two-row five-passenger model. The Santa Fe XL adds a third row to carry seven. The diesel variant of the Santa Fe model will have a third-row bench.

The vehicle freshens a popular nameplate in what’s becoming the largest segment for automakers in the U.S. As industry sales plateau, SUV sales have grown for most automakers here as buyers shun passenger cars.

The all-new Santa Fe comes standard with rear cross traffic avoidance systems, and sensors in the back seat that can detect if children or pets are in the back of the vehicle. Another feature also prevents the car doors from being opened if a vehicle is approaching from behind the SUV.

The lineup has three engine options: a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine offering 185-horsepower; a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower; or the 2.2-liter CRDi turbodiesel with 190 horsepower. All are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
