General Motors Co. said Thursday it has hired Jill Sutton, 43, as corporate secretary and deputy general counsel for corporate, finance and strategic transactions.

Sutton, who was general counsel and corporate secretary for Tim Hortons Inc., will report to Craig Glidden, GM’s general counsel since March 1. The move is effective immediately.

“Jill is a highly accomplished executive, having served as the general counsel and corporate secretary of a publicly traded company, and she has helped lead significant corporate transactions, including the Tim Hortons IPO and its eventual sale to Burger King,” Glidden said in a statement.

Sutton previously served as corporate counsel at Wendy’s International Inc. and worked for Squire Sanders LLP and Eastman & Smith Ltd., where she practiced corporate and health care law.
