General Motors Co. said Wednesday it has named Tony Francavilla as vice president of global quality.

Fancavilla, 58, has worked at GM since 1979 beginning as a co-op student at GM Canada and has held several leadership roles in manufacturing and senior roles within the automaker’s quality department. He will report to GM CEO Mary Barra and fill the position vacated by Grace Lieblein, who retired at the end of last year.

Francavilla will oversee GM’s quality efforts and has experience leading manufacturing operations and in engineering and supplier quality.

“We intend to earn customers for life by delivering exceptional quality,” Barra said in a statement. “Tony’s diverse technical expertise and global leadership experience position him well to further accelerate GM’s progress in every aspect of vehicle quality.”
