General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet brand will reveal the next-generation Traverse SUV Jan. 9 at the North American International Auto Show.

The all-new 2018 Traverse, which can seat up to eight passengers, has a new, bolder design and will offer new technologies, Chevrolet said. GM’s largest brand said the new Traverse is expected to have the most third-row legroom in the midsize SUV segment, along with maximum cargo space. The Traverse also is expected to be lighter than the model it replaces and offer improved fuel economy.

A teaser shot of the Traverse shows a side profile that is similar to the redesigned Chevrolet Equinox. In September, Chevy debuted the redesigned 2018 Equinox compact crossover, which shed weight, added interior space and will offer a new turbo diesel engine option. It is expected to go on sale early next year.

“Nobody in the industry offers a broader, fresher lineup of SUVs and crossovers than Chevrolet,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and brand chief of Global Chevrolet, in a statement. “From the all-electric Bolt EV to America’s longest-running nameplate, Suburban, we’ve got something for every customer and lifestyle.”

Analysts expect GM’s GMC brand will show a new Terrain compact crossover at a Jan. 8 event ahead of press days at the Detroit auto show.
