General Motors Co. named a new head of global human resources after Jose Tomas left the position after just eight months on the job.

Kimberly Brycz, formerly GM’s executive director of global product purchasing, succeeds Tomas effective immediately, the automaker said in a statement. Brycz, a Detroit native, has held the global product purchasing position since 2013.

Her career with the company dates to 1983 when she started at the Cadillac Motor Car Division in Detroit. She spent several years with the global purchasing team, leading the purchasing of interiors, electrical systems and batteries.

Brycz is a graduate of Michigan State University, with a bachelor of business administration degree. She also leads two of GM’s employee resource groups, serving on the board for the GM Asian Connections and GM Women Group.

“Kim brings to the job a strong set of leadership and organizational skills that will help lead our ongoing efforts to transform the company through our people and culture,” CEO Mary Barra said in the statement. “Kim exemplifies the leadership behaviors that are critical to the collective success of the company.”

Barra held the HR chief job from 2009 to 2011.

The global HR position has become increasingly crucial for GM, which set out to revamp its internal culture following its federally induced bankruptcy and a recall crisis that involved some 30 million vehicles with faulty ignition switches connected to 124 deaths.

Tomas left the position late last month after a short stay with the company, breaking from GM’s recent success in keeping its front office intact. While GM struggled with high rates of executive turnover prior to bankruptcy, the company’s top brass has mostly stayed consistent under Barra’s leadership, marking a stark difference from a recent series of shakeups at crosstown rival Ford Motor Co.

Tomas was an outside hire, most recently holding a similar HR leadership position at Anthem Inc., a health benefits company. He told the Wall Street Journal, which first reported his departure, that he plans to launch a new business venture.
