Carson’s to open 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

Bon-Ton Stores Inc., which operates 19 Carson’s, Younkers and Elder-Beerman stores across the state, will open at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Thursday, putting it in direct competition with Macy’s, which also opens at that time.

Both companies will open two hours earlier than last year for the Thanksgiving day sale, which traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season retail push. The earlier hours signal a shift from what used to be a one-day shopping event the day after Thanksgiving to what has become, in many cases, a weeklong competition for sales between stores.

A shorter holiday shopping season than last year — just 28 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve — could also be pushing earlier hours.

The Bon-Ton sale will offer over 600 doorbusters, special coupons and deals for its customers, the company announced Thursday.

The first 200 people in line will be given gift cards worth $5 to $250 — every store will have at least one of the $250 winners. In-store doorbusters will be in effect until 3 p.m. on Black Friday. But online doorbusters will be available starting 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Some of the deals offered in-store and online include:

■$19.97 women’s boots

■$19.97 reversible down-alternative comfortors

■40-60 percent off coffee makers

■Buy 1, get 2 free on select men’s sportwear
