Detroit — Will Leather Goods, a Eugene Oregon-based lifestyle brand of handcrafted leather bags and accessories, will be opening a store in Midtown this fall.

The shop, which will be located at 4120 Second Avenue and include 9,000 square feet of retail space, is scheduled to open Sept. 1.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for William Adler, the founder and creative director of Will Leather Goods: He was born and raised in northwest Detroit.

“Detroit is the perfect backdrop to bring together my past, the present, and future of Will Leather Goods,” Adler said in a statement. “The city is a metropolis of creativity firmly rooted in America’s history and we’re delighted to be part of the growth of Midtown.”

The store will be his eighth location, allowing the company to revitalize the former Tomboy grocery store building. The lead architects are McIntosh Poris Associates out of Birmingham. The firm also worked on the Woodward Garden Apartments.

Will Leather Goods also has locations in Venice Beach, Calif., its flagship store, three locations in Portland, Ore., one in New York City, San Francisco and Eugene, Oregon.

The stores sell vintage and new belts, shoes, bags, wallets and other accessories for men and women with prices between $95 and $1,200.

Midtown Detroit, the nonprofit planning and development organization that supports the revitalization of Midtown, praised Adler’s return to his hometown.

“By opening in Detroit, Will Leather Goods joins brands who have taken a keen interest in making Midtown a shopping destination,” said Executive Director Susan Mosey. “Rich in culture and inspiration, we believe the friendliness and approachability of this brand will resonate with members of the Detroit community.”
