Discount retailer Stein Mart breaks into Metro Detroit market with Rochester Hills store
Discount retailer Stein Mart is taking over the former Borders book store in Rochester Hills, the company's first location in Southeast Michigan and second in the state.
The Jacksonville, Fla.-chain, which sells clothing, and housewares, plans to be in the space on Rochester Road between Avon and Hamlin Roads by mid-November, said company spokeswoman Linda Tasseff.
The Borders store closed in Fall 2011; a Famous Furniture moved into part of it afterward.
Construction has already begun to add an additional 5,600 square feet to the building, making it 51,000 total square feet. Stein Mart plans to occupy 32,000 square feet of that, joining with the Pet Smart location already using part of it.
City staff approved the project in December, said Manager of Planning Sara Roediger. The retailer was not given any incentives to come to the location.
"It's great to see new retailers come to the city, especially new retailers in the market," she said.
The Stein Mart is only the second in the state. A location opened in Portage near Kalamazoo in 2001.
In February, Stein Mart announced plans to open 11 new stores in 2015 following a big 2014 which saw sales grow by more than 4 percent. The other stores, which are set to open through the end of the year, include two in Florida, three in Southern California and single stores in Long Island, New York, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Atlanta and Phoenix. The retailer also plans to relocate a store in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to a new location.
