L.L. Bean to open first Mich. store this summer
Maine-based outdoor retailer L.L. Bean said Friday it’s opening its first Michigan store at The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township this summer.
The 14,000-square-foot store will be located in the mall’s Center Court between the Pandora jewelry story and Lush cosmetics store and will employ about 100. Those interested in jobs can apply at www.llbeancareers.com.
The company said it made the decision to come to the Great Lakes State partly because of the area’s abundant natural resources and opportunity for outdoor activities.
“From paddling and fishing on the Clinton River and in Lake St. Clair, to cycling along the Clinton River Trail, we know this is going to be a great home for us because of all of the great outdoor activities to be had, all within a stone’s throw from the store,” said Ken Kacere, senior vice-president and general manager of retail at L.L. Bean. “Lots of people know us through our catalogs and website, but our newest store in Michigan will give folks in the Detroit area the chance to experience the true essence of an outdoor store and the L.L. Bean brand firsthand.”
The retailer is expanding elsewhere, too. Last month it announced its first Rhode Island store and now has 30 locations outside Maine.
The new Michigan store will include an “Outdoor Discovery School,” which will offer demonstrations, clinics and introductory hands-on activities like snowshoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, archery and fly casting. The company said that more than 140,000 people participated in such programs in 2015.
