The combo of crispy fried chicken and sweet, syrupy waffles is growing in popularity, and Kuzzo’s in Detroit opened this week with multiple versions of the dish.

Named after a term of endearment (like calling someone “cousin”) Kuzzo’s had a soft opening Tuesday at 19345 Livernois near Outer Drive. This week customers got their first taste of the What Up Doe, a chicken and waffles dish that includes three pieces of chicken, two waffles, grits, eggs and cheese.

For a lighter plate (relatively), the Dark and Lovely has one thigh, one drumstick and one waffle. Go all out with the Big Papa: a 10 ounce T-bone steak, waffle, two eggs and potatoes.

Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles, which is owned by former St. Louis Rams player and Detroit native Ron Bartell, also has omelets, sandwiches, salads, a children’s menu and loads of sides, including red beans and rice, green beans, mac and cheese, fruit and candied yams.

The beverage menu features Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company products and homemade lemonade. We’re told that a cocktail bar will be added in the next few weeks. Expect craft cocktails made with Detroit-based spirits and Michigan beer.

Kuzzo’s is open 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Tues.-Sun. Call (313) 861-0229 for carry out orders.

Major in brewing at two Kalamazoo colleges

Michigan continues to grow as a craft beer destination as Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Western Michigan University team up to offer a higher education program in sustainable brewing.

Starting this fall, students can earn a certificate or associate degree at KVCC and then take additional classes at WMU to obtain the Bachelor of Science degree. The science-heavy curriculum was built with input from the state’s top craft brewers.

Oxford Inn final service

Royal Oak’s Oxford Inn will close next week, making way for a new restaurant, Jim Brady’s Detroit. The Oxford’s final service will be 3-9 p.m. Feb. 8. It’s open every day through then, except for Sunday.
