How many coney dogs could you eat? You’ll have to eat more than 17 and 3/4 of them at the American Coney Island annual Coney Eating Challenge if you want to beat the record set last year by Matt Holowicki of Plymouth.

Registration recently opened for the fifth annual event, which takes place Sept. 3. The Detroit Police will square off against the Detroit Fire and EMT staff at 5:30 p.m., followed by the public contest at 5:45 p.m.

Competitive eaters can register in advance for $10, or the day of for $15. The event is open to the public but there is a $5 suggested donation. Registration fees, cover charge and $1 from every coney sold on Sept. 3 will benefit Detroit Police and Fire charities.

It all goes down at American Coney Island, 114 W. Lafayette in Detroit. Call (586) 219-0995 to register.
