How to spend New Year's Eve in Metro Detroit

It’s the last hurrah of the year; the final dance of 2015. While it’s always easier and cheaper to just stay home on New Year’s Eve and avoid the craziness, it’s not as fun as going all out and embracing your inner party animal.

One trend this year may be some party-goers having one eye on the dance floor and the other on the game. Michigan State plays the University of Alabama in the Cotton Bowl, and the Red Wings go against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Joe Louis Arena. The Detroit Pistons also have a home game battling the Minnesota Timberwolves at The Palace.

The games are only an early distraction, though, and there’s plenty of time throughout the night to show off your glitziest dress, sharpest suit or most embarrassing dance moves.

We’ve compiled a list of nightlife events that we hope has something for everyone:

The big free event: The Drop is a free party at Campus Martius with a Detroit-themed ball drop, plus live music and a party inside an 11,000-square-foot heated and carpeted tent (a ticket is required for the tent after 7 p.m.). An early party for kids runs 4-7 p.m. with the Detroit Youth Choir, a magician, face painting and the like. The ball drops again at midnight for the adults with food, bars, and a 8-by-14-foot LED screen showing the Cotton Bowl game. 4 p.m.-1 a.m. Free. 800 Woodward, Detroit.

The view: The Countdown to 2016 has DJs, dancing and a champagne toast, but the 360 degree view of the city from the Top of the Pontch at Crowne Plaza Detroit is the real attraction. The most basic ticket ($95) includes a premium bar for four hours, hors d’oeuvres, party favors and a late night snack buffet. Dinner, reserved tables, reserved couches with bottle service and other packages available. 8 p.m.-2 a.m., 2 Washington, Detroit. (248) 543-1000 or

Symphonic celebration: The Detroit Symphony Orchestra literally rolls out the red carpet for guests to ring in the new year at Orchestra Hall. Themed parties: The Arbor Brewing Co. Microbrewery in Ypsilanti is hosting a Gatsby-themed party with live music from the Appleseed Collective. Besides 1920s-inspired dress, there will be beers influenced by the era and French food. 7 p.m.-2 a.m. No cover. 720 Norris, Ypsilanti. (734) 480-2739.

Be trendy: Dine at one of downtown Detroit’s newest restaurants, Townhouse Detroit. The spacious and chic spot is also hosting a 1920s-themed party and would like guests to dress in formal attire appropriate for the era. Tickets include a five-course tasting menu and champagne, and there will be live music and a DJ. The 5 p.m. seating is $125, 7:30 p.m. is $175 and 10 p.m. is $200. Townhouse will open to the public at 10 p.m. to serve a late night menu. 500 Woodward, Detroit. Call (313) 723-1000 for reservations.

Take a drive: Only 30 guests will be permitted to this intimate party at Lone Oak Vineyard Estate in Grass Lake with dancing to the music of R&B and soul duo Doug Decker and Tony Fields. The $75 ticket includes a five-course meal featuring prime rib and bacon-wrapped shrimp and a champagne toast.
