Vault of Midnight comic book shop to open downtown Detroit store
Ann Arbor comic book store Vault of Midnight announced this week the family-owned business would expand to include a downtown Detroit location this spring.
Vault of Midnight will open a 2,000-square-foot store at 1226 Library in the the Z, a Bedrock Real Estate building.
“We’ve spent the last year and a half traveling all over the city of Detroit looking for a perfect location,” the owners said in a Facebook post Sunday. “We give a tremendous amount of care and spent a lot (a LOT) of time thinking about what kind of comic shop we want to be. It’s not enough just to open our doors and turn on a cash register; we want as many people on planet Earth to read comic books as is possible.”
The space is being built by Michigan firms Cantelon Finishers and By the River Carpentry, but until then the shop is having fun with fans on social media leading up to the opening.
During the construction period a large banner with a ghostly spaceman drawn by Detroit native Seth St. Pierre will hang in front of the shop. Fans are invited to take photos with the artwork and post it to Facebook or Twitter tagging @vaultofmidnight. One winner will be chosen each week and will win merchandise and other prizes.
“The Vault of Midnight team built their business around the excitement and vibrancy of visual imagery and that's exactly what we did with The Z and The Belt,” Dan Mullen, Executive Vice President of Bedrock Real Estate Services said in a press release. “The shop fits perfectly with our vision for Library Street, its innovative retailers and the area's amazing works of art.”
Vault of Midnight was founded in 1996 and also has a Grand Rapids location.
