Name: Johnny Trudell
Detroit legend: Trumpet player Trudell was the lead trumpet player for Motown Records, meaning he’s worked with big names like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops and others. He also sat in with big bands led by Tommy Dorsey, Bob Crosby and more. These days, he performs in clubs around town and is a regular at the Detroit Jazz Festival at Hart Plaza over Labor Day weekend.
Next up: Trudell performs several sets this weekend at the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, 97 Kercheaval in Grosse Pointe. See him at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. There’s no cover charge on Thursday; $15 on Friday and Saturday. Reservations are recommended by calling (313) 882-5299.
