Big 3: Top events Saturday and Sunday in Metro Detroit

1. Michigan Comic Con at Cobo Center: Comic artists and pop culture are the core of these types of conventions, but celebrity guests help with the hype, too. Some of the stars scheduled to appear include actors Cary Elwes and Lea Thompson plus “Star Trek” legend Nichelle Nichols and others. Noon-midnight Fri., 10 a.m.-midnight Sat. and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sun. $30-$60. 1 Washington Blvd., Detroit. 

2. Motor City Muscle in Downtown Detroit: A celebration of rock and roll and muscle cars, this new event includes three days of hot cars and seven stages of entertainment. Musical highlights include the Gories (7:45 p.m. Sat.), Ace Frehley (10:15 p.m. Sat.) and Sponge (10:15 p.m. Sun.). Look for food trucks and a "beer garage," too. Sat.-Sun. Free. Campus Martius, Spirit of Detroit Plaza and Hart Plaza. Woodward near Jefferson, Detroit. 

3. African World Festival: One of the highlights of this annual celebration of African culture, music and food is a performance by the Clark Sisters (4 p.m. Sat). On Sunday, the Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago takes the main stage at 8 p.m. The 36th annual festival also has poetry, arts and crafts, vendors and more. 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sat.-Sun. Free. 315 E.
