Call it art for a good cause.

Wasserman Projects in Eastern Market will host the 24th-annual charity art auction, ArtWorks Detroit Thursday from 6 -10 p.m.

Both the live and silent auctions, which last year drew 300 people and raised $80,000, benefit Detroit’s Matrix Human Services organization. It has a mission of educating children, supporting families, preventing HIV and rebuilding neighborhoods across the Detroit community.

As usual, there will be a dizzying array of works from 75 of the area’s most-distinguished artists. Contributors this year include Laurie Tennent, Sheefy McFly, Taurus Burns, Priscilla Phifer, Darcel Deneau and Scott Hocking.

“We are extremely fortunate to have the generous support of the artists,” said Kellie Mitchell, Matrix vice-president of marketing and development. “I love that they come together to donate art, so we can donate funds raised back to the community.”

ArtWorks Detroit was founded 24 years ago to benefit the Michigan AIDS Coalition, which has since been folded into Matrix.

This year the event will be hosted by three “art-powerhouse couples,” as Matrix puts it — Carmen and George N’Namdi, Karen and Ed Ogul, and Linda and David Whitaker.

The retail value of the artworks at auction ranges from $50-$8,000.

Guests can also bid on six different luxury trips to Mexican resorts during the live auction, each with a market value of about $5,000 (airfare not included).

Artworks Detroit general-admission tickets are $100 per person. Those buying VIP tickets for $150 will get in an hour before everyone else, at 5 p.m., with the opportunity to buy works outright rather than bidding at auction.

All guests will enjoy an open bar, intriguing food selections from Detroit restaurants, and entertainment with a DJ.

For those who haven’t visited, Wasserman Projects is a large, handsome gallery in a renovated industrial building at the north end of Eastern Market.

“It’s a perfect location,” Mitchell said. “It’s downtown in the market, and that brings a lot of richness and creativity to the event.”
