Street fairs kick off fall in Ferndale this weekend

Downtown Ferndale has outdoor festivals of one kind or another throughout the summer, but its most popular may be the two-for-one event that happens as the season changes from summer to autumn each September.

This weekend the DIY Street Fair will take over the east side of Nine Mile at Woodward, and the Funky Ferndale Art Fair will set up on the west side.

Both the events have the city's eclectic and art-centric vibe.

The focus of the DIY Street Fair is the rows of vendors selling handmade crafts, creations and other artful treasures. A big draw is the food, beer and live music, too.

Musical highlights of this year's DIY include a rare performance by venerable Detroit garage rock band the Gories. The trio will close out the fest Saturday night.

Friday night's headliners are nationally-known rock band JR JR. Sunday night the music stage features rock band the High Strung and Celtic-style punk band Stone Clover.

On the other side of Woodward, the Funky Ferndale Art Fair aims to find artists who are more original than those found at your average outdoor art festival. Besides 100 juried artists, this event also has hair art and body art demonstrations, and DJs keep the vibe flowing.
