Detroit’s summer kick-off party, GM River Days June 22-24, will include concerts from R&B and funk throwback bands Kool & the Gang and Morris Day and the Time. 

The riverfront festival will have 50 musical acts in all, plus an aerial show performed by the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum, organizers announced Wednesday.

Other headliners include Canadian R&B singer Tamia, Beatlemania Live! and soul singer Avant. Bobby Murray Band featuring Lenny Watkins and Tosha Owens, classic rockers Frijid Pink and Celtic punk band Stone Clover are among top local headliners.

Admission to the annual festival is $5, or $3 before 5 p.m. VIP seats for the headlining concerts are $35 and on sale at RiverDays.com/Music

GM River Days — which spans from the William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor to the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority Terminal and Dock — also has children’s programming, Coast Guard cutter tours, outdoor skills challenges with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and other activities.

The festival was first held in 2007 and has traditionally lead into the city's annual fireworks display, which is scheduled for 9:55 p.m. on June 25.
