Here's an opportunity to score some great local art and support a worthy organization at the same time:

ArtWorks Detroit, the annual fundraiser and auction to benefit the nonprofit Matrix Human Services, will be  6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at Wasserman Projects in Eastern Market.

Some 115 pieces of art, ranging from paintings to sculpture to mosaics, will be auctioned off at the gallery’s early-evening party in the gallery. Bidding — in person, only — starts at 7 p.m.

"At retail value," said Kerrie Mitchell, Matrix vice-president of marketing and development, "the pieces are worth from $50 to $5,000 — a good range for anyone interested in purchasing art."

Any number of significant Detroit artists are represented, including Sandra Cook, Sergio De Giusti, Jeff Cancelosi, Jeri Hollister, Scott Hocking, Mary Keithan and Rick Vian.

But there's more than just great art.

"This year we also have 'experience packages,'" Mitchell said. "One involves a two-night stay in Las Vegas courtesy MGM Grand Casino, plus a show, breakfast and lunch. And there's also a trip to Mexico, with choice of seven locations."

Last year, Mitchell said, about 300 people attended the fundraiser, which grossed about $90,000 for the organization.

Matrix’s social-service programs focus on early childhood, homeless youth, and HIV/AIDS support, among other pressing needs. The Head Start program is the largest in the city.

ArtWorks Detroit was launched 23 years ago to benefit the Michigan AIDS Coalition, which has become part of Matrix.
