Chef brings Sicilian influence back to Royal Oak

Melody Baetens
The Detroit News

Diners in Royal Oak can get an authentic taste of Sicily at Trattoria Da Luigi with the addition of new Italian dishes.

Owner Luigi Cutraro sent his chef Steve Siekierzynski to study for two weeks in Cutraro's native town San Vito Lo Capo as well as Catania, Sicily. Siekierzynski learned techniques and recipes to bring back with him to the Royal Oak restaurant, which opened last year. Before this, Cutraro was the longtime owner of Sangria, which now has a new life as Bistro 82.

Look for new offerings such as gamberi fantasia (shrimp fantasy), pork ragu and mussels with garlic, tomato and crushed chilis. Siekierzynski said the most important lesson he learned on his trip to Sicily was "keep it simple."

Trattoria Da Luigi, 415 S. Washington in Royal Oak, also has wood-burning oven-fired pizzas, and rustic Italian dishes, including pasta, fish and salads.
