Barrel-aged cocktails on tap at MGM Grand Detroit

There, Shaun Page, sommelier and beverage development manager at the hotel-entertainment complex, is aging three cocktails — made famous during Prohibition — in oak barrels. The cocktails — Nigroni, Old Fashioned and El Presidente — are premixed (and tweaked according to Page's creativity) and aged 45 to 55 days.

The barrels, Page notes, add toasty and sweet complexities to each cocktail. "It's crazy. People order them continuously," he says.

Old Fashioned is the most popular. Bulleit Rye, Bulleit Straight Bourbon, Luxardo Cherry Sangue Morlacco, and turbinado sugar syrup are mixed and aged for 55 days. The staff adds Bittercube cherry bark vanilla and orange bitters before serving.

Here's good new for local foodies: Katoi, which serves traditional Thai street food from a mobile truck parked behind the popular Two James Distillery in Corktown, plans to open a brick and mortar shop in the spring. More details to come.

Holiday Cheer at Wild Lights at Detroit Zoo: View the zoo's massive light sculpture display in an adults-only setting with holiday beverages. 6-10 p.m. Dec. 4. $40 (includes three drinks and admission), $25 designated driver ticket. Woodward at I-696, Royal Oak.

Whiskey Experience at Barrister Garden Banquet Center: Hosted by Dave Harden, owner of the Butter Run Saloon in St. Clair Shores, this whiskey-tasting event benefits the Luella M.
