Celebrity chef revamps Punch Bowl Social’s menus

Celebrity chef Hugh Acheson has signed on as culinary partner at Punch Bowl Social restaurants. The “Top Chef” judge is transforming the menus chain-wide, including the Detroit location at 1331 Broadway.

The overhauled bill of fare includes new items for dinner and lunch, breakfast, weekend brunch and late night. It was unveiled last week and already in place at the Detroit location.

The menu now centers on Acheson’s specialty; southern-style food with a modern twist.

Hugh Leonard, general manager of the Detroit location, said the menu was more than 90 percent revamped.

But several drink items, including the namesake punch bowls (which can serve up to eight people) are still available. The chicken wings with sweet cilantro sauce and the chicken and waffles dish are also familiar items on this new menu.

Punch Bowl Social, which opened in December 2014, is essentially a nightlife destination with video games, private karaoke rooms and a bowling alley, so expect bar-friendly food like burgers, street tacos and poutine. This pub grub will mix with trendy items like a kale Caesar salad, fried hominy and black-eyed pea hummus.

Many of the new items, including a pimiento cheese spread served with toast points, are easily sharable.

The restaurant’s new offerings also take health into consideration, with a totally gluten-free menu and a superfood grain bowl with farrow, quinoa, kale radishes, mushrooms, sprouts and carrots. Even the “fried bologna” sandwich is actually made with nitrate-free, sustainably-raised Fra’Mani mortadella.

A “half-pints” menu has eight items for kids, several which can be made vegetarian or gluten-free.

The daily breakfast menu has a crispy chicken biscuit, monkey bread French toast and fresh-squeezed juice cocktails. The weekend brunch menu is a blend of the daily breakfast and lunch/dinner menus. Weekend brunch is served 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sat-Sun.

Canadian-born Acheson is best known as a judge on Bravo’s reality cooking show “Top Chef.” He owns four restaurants in home state of Georgia.

Punch Bowl Social is open 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Mon.-Fri. and 9 a.m.-2 a.m. Sat.-Sun. Reservations accepted. Call (313) 749-9738.
