It may sound like a place affluent people in southern California gather, but the Beverly Hills Grill is a longstanding neighborhood restaurant in Metro Detroit, and it’s having a big birthday this week.

This Friday, the California-inspired Grill celebrates 30 years of service on Southfield just north of W. 13 Mile. While Friday is the actual anniversary – it opened March 16, 1988 – guests can take advantage of specials and promotions all month long.

Three-course dinners will be on special for $30, with options changing each week. Also, every time a diner eats at Beverly Hills Grill in the month of March, they can enter to win a $300 dining gift certificate.

The gift certificate is good for any of the Grill’s sister restaurants in the Roberts Restaurant Group, which also includes Streetside Seafood in Birmingham, Town Tavern in downtown Royal Oak, Roadside B&G and Cafe ML in Bloomfield Township and Bill’s in Bloomfield Hills.

Proprietor Bill Roberts credits his chef and staff for keeping the Grill – which is popular for brunch – open and busy for three decades.

“The Grill was probably the first place in the area that really got into the chalkboard specials,” he said, naming his corporate chef Patrick Roettele, who has been with the group for 28 years. “He’s really the guy that’s kept it fresh for all these decades, and stayed current with what people are looking for.”

Roberts says focusing on hospitality and “being part of a neighborhood” has also propelled the business.

“Our staff gets to know our guests and they keep coming back,” he said. “Many people have said it’s their club in so many ways.”

Roberts that while there are challenges with running a restaurant in 2018 – namely the shortage of qualified employees to staff all the new restaurants that have been popping up – he says at the end of the day what is important is that day’s service.

“Did we take care of our guests? Were they happy with our food and service?” he said. “It’s still what it’s all about.”

Beverly Hills Grill, 31471 Southfield in Beverly Hills, is open 7 a.m.-11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., 7 a.m.-midnight Fri., 8 a.m.-midnight Sat. and 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Sun. The restaurant does not accept reservations. Call (248) 642-2355 or visit
