A new restaurant concept will debut within the Jolly Pumpkin and Bastone Brewery space in downtown Royal Oak Tuesday.

Gogi Seoul Kitchen aims to serve Korean-inspired street food, soju and other traditional Asian beverages in a fast-casual setting. Opening Tuesday at 4 p.m., Gogi will have a separate kitchen, but will share a bar and restrooms with Jolly Pumpkin, which is at 419 S. Main. The entrance to Gogi is around the corner at 109 E. Fifth. 

While Bastone the restaurant is now totally gone after moving into the smaller space when Jolly Pumpkin moved in last August, Bastone Brewery still operates out of the basement of the building. In fact, Bastone Brewery will be creating two new beers to go with Gogi’s menu: Raspberry Kitten and Gogi-Wan-Kenobi. 

There’s an actual Seoul connection in the Jolly Pumpkin family, too. Northern United Brewing Company,the parent company to Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales and North Peak Brewing Company, have friends and family in South Korean and have partnered with them on a microbrewery there called Playground Brewery. 

Jolly Pumpkin managing partner Jon Carlson has traveled to South Korea to research food there for Gogi. 

“We really wanted to take some traditional Korean dishes and infuse them with the flavors of other Asian cultures,” Carlson said in a press release Friday.  “What we ended up with was a really cool menu of Korean-inspired street food that’s very approachable and authentic.”  

He adds that Jolly Pumpkin’s sour beers will pair well with fermented vegetables like kimchi. The Gogi menu will also have a beet poke salad and dolsot bibimbap. 

Opening Tuesday, Gogi Seoul Kitchen is at 109 E. Fifth in Royal Oak. Hours are 4-11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., 4 p.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. and 4-10 p.m. Sun. Visit
