Avon Donuts in Pontiac named among best by Time Magazine
A family-owned doughnut shop in Pontiac famous for their old-fashioned flavors was recently named one of Time Magazines best in America.
Time Magazine partnered with Yelp to put together the list in honor of National Donut Day on June 1. The list was compiled through a Yelp algorithm factoring the number of positive reviews and an eatery's star rating.
"The small shop has just five seats and regularly sells out of its most popular doughnuts," the article reads. "If you want to get there early, note that the store is open most days from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m."
In the 38 years it's been opened, the shop has always remained family owned. Ling Ly, 34, took over ownership in 2005 and told The Detroit News the announcement took her by surprise.
"We found out on National Donut Day, an 18-hour bake day where we sold out of everything," said Ly, from Holland. "Someone shared the news of Facebook and even though we were so tired after a long day, I was completely shocked and it was such an adrenaline rush, we kept working."
Avon carries classic along with specialty flavors such as caramel apple, maple bacon, glazed blueberry cake and lemon drop. Ly said the most popular has to be their original honey glaze.
"We make our own glaze, and it's just a different type of unique icing topping to a light and fluffy doughnut," Ly said. "Most places sell cookies or baked goods, but we focus only on handmade doughnuts."
Featured this month include cookies and cream, cotton candy and strawberry cheesecake doughnuts. Doughnuts range from $1.35 to $2.75. Ly also recommends trying their humongous apple fritters.
