Zeke's in Ferndale to close Wednesday, Bobcat Bonnie's is moving in
The last day of punk rock music blaring from the stereo and burnt ends flying from the kitchen at Zeke's Rock and Roll BBQ in Ferndale will be Wednesday.
Last week the restaurant, which opened in February 2015, announced the closure on social media.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce Zeke’s will be closed permanently," a post on Facebook read. "These past few years have been nothing short of amazing and we thank everyone for making them happen. Please stop in within the next week, grab some delicious BBQ, and wish us farewell."
The 240 W. Nine Mile space, which was once AJ's Cafe, won't be empty for long, though. Bobcat Bonnie's owner Matthew Buskard says he's readying to put his much-buzzed-about Ferndale location here and planning to open next month.
Buskard, who has Bobcat Bonnie's locations in Corktown and Wyandotte, says he will keep anyone on the Zeke's staff who wants to stick around, and will hire additional staff, too.
"We are going to be keeping some of Zeke's signature menu items as well," Buskard said. "The veggie poutine is very popular."
Besides having some of Zeke's food, the Ferndale Bobcat Bonnie's will differ from the other locations by having later hours to complement Ferndale's nightlife scene.
As for the visuals, Buskard said they're going to restore the building's original floor and ceiling and make the vibe "a little funky" and re-arrange the dining area. The Tiki-style, enclosed patio will get a new look next season, too.
Reports came out last month that Bobcat Bonnie's would open in a different Ferndale location, but Buskard said that plan is off.
He said at first when the West Nine Mile Bobcat Bonnie's opens next month they will serve dinner only, followed by a brunch and lunch rollout weeks later. Visit facebook.com/bobcatbonniesferndale.
