Sony and Marvel find new Spider-Man star, director

Sony and Marvel have announced a new star and director for the next ‘Spider-Man’ film, due in 2017. Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) will play Peter Parker, while Jon Watts (“Cop Car”) will direct.

Holland will be the third actor to play the web-slinger on film: Tobey Maguire starred in 2002’s “Spider-Man” and its three sequels, while Andrew Garfield took over the role in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” All five previous films were all produced entirely under the banner of Sony, who has held the feature rights to the character since 1999. In February, Sony and Marvel Studios announced a partnership that would bring a new version of the character into Marvel’s own film universe.

“With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” producer Amy Pascal said in a statement.
