The next “Star Wars” film has a title: “The Last Jedi.”

“The Last Jedi” is Episode VIII of the “Skywalker saga,” and a direct sequel to 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” Written and directed by Rian Johnson, it will be released on Dec. 15, 2017.

The title is likely a reference to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). A short video released last year showed him filming with Johnson and Daisy Ridley on the Irish island of Skellig Michael, where the final scene of “The Force Awakens” was also filmed. Johnson has previously said that the new film will begin right where "The Force Awakens" left off.

Most of the cast of “The Force Awakens” will return, including Ridley, Hamill, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac. Carrie Fisher, who died last month, had already completed filming.

The last “Star Wars” film, the standalone “Rogue One,” has just passed the $1 billion mark at the box office.
