The indie rock and alt-pop festival, now in its third year, moves downtown and features Modest Mouse and Passion Pit

There’s mo’ Mo Pop to go around this year.

The indie rock and alt-pop festival, now in its third year, is expanding from one day to two and moving from its home at Sterling Heights’ Freedom Hill Amphitheatre to Detroit’s West Riverfront Park. The fest will unfold July 25-26 with a lineup headlined by Modest Mouse and Passion Pit.

Other acts on the bill include Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, Montreal dance-funk outfit Chromeo, Calgary buzz band Viet Cong, Aussie alt-rockers Atlas Genius, Vermont-bred garage rocker King Tuff and Detroit’s own Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas.

Tickets, $99.50 general admission or $199 VIP, go on sale at 10 a.m. April 10 through the festival’s website,, or by phone at (888) 929-7849. A presale will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Friday with a limited number of $79 tickets; sign up at the website or like the fest’s official Facebook page for access to the presale password.

Mo Pop was launched in summer 2013, a crowded festival season that saw the debut of several new events on the local map, including Metallica’s Orion festival, Australia’s Laneway festival, Fort Wayne’s Oakaloosa festival and the three-day country music blowout Faster Horses. Mo Pop and Faster Horses were the only ones to graduate to year two, and Mo Pop’s expansion this year is a good sign of its strength heading forward.

In addition to a lineup of two dozen bands, the fest will also highlight local beers, food trucks, local handmade goods and a space focused on local tech.

The West Riverfront Park, located just west of Joe Louis Arena between Jefferson Avenue and the Detroit Riverfront, played host to Kem’s hometown concert last summer and is also the new site of WYCD’s Downtown Hoedown, June 5-6.
