Girls Rock Detroit to teach musicianship, self esteem

A new summer camp — one that focuses more on bar chords than bunk beds — is coming to Detroit this summer.

Girls Rock Detroit is a weeklong music day camp July 13-18 at Michigan State University's Community Music School on Woodward. Campers don't need any previous music experience. The program is open to girls and female-identifying youth ages 8-16.

Besides learning how to play instruments and perform with a band, organizers say they hope the environment builds self-esteem.

"Our camp will be staffed with local female musicians and activists who will all be volunteering their time," says Willa Rae Adamo, one of Girls Rock Detroit's organizers, who is also a musician. "We want young girls to have powerful female role models in their lives!"

Adamo says the camp's cost will be on a sliding scale, with a maximum of $200.

"It is incredibly important that the camp be accessible to those who want to attend, regardless of socioeconomic status. We will be providing transportation via carpool for those parents for whom that is a barrier."

Adamo, who lives, works and goes to school in Detroit, says it's also important to her that some of the students at Girls Rock Detroit are residents of the city, and not only kids from the suburbs.

"The reason we chose to host the camp in the city is because we want Detroit families to benefit from it."

Adamo, along with other volunteers Melissa Coppola and Rosalind Hartigan, were volunteers at the Girls Rock Chicago summer camp and Adamo also participated in last year's Iowa City Girls Rock Camp.

After a week of instruction, campers will perform an original song on the last day of camp.

"The bands will work with their band coaches to write an original song by the end of the week. On Saturday (July 18), they will get to perform their original song at a real life venue for their friends and family under the bright lights with the big amps and mics."
