Headlining this year’s Heroes Gala for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on June 6 will be one of music director Leonard Slatkin’s Hollywood High School buddies — bluesy rocker extraordinaire Randy Newman.

The orchestra announced Wednesday that Newman, author of “Short People” and the “Toy Story” soundtrack, will perform with the DSO for what is described as a night of music and storytelling.

“I’ve known Leonard since we were children,” Newman was quoted in the press release. “One of us took the good road and one of us took the bad road.”

The Heroes Gala aims to raise $1 million for music education programs for kids. The evening, which will also include dinner and late-night dancing, will honor the late Bill Davidson, longtime DSO donor and supporter.

For reservations for the concert or concert and gala dinner, call (313) 576-5111 or visit dso.org.
