Food, booze and jams hog the spotlight at Pig & Whiskey

Pair food from local restaurants with sips of whiskey from national brands, mix in some indie rock bands and you have a good idea of the vibe at Pig and Whiskey.

The annual outdoor festival returns this weekend, bringing Ferndale a chance to try barbeque and other comfort foods from restaurants around Metro Detroit. Snag tacos from Detroit’s Alley Taco, a barbeque parfait from Zeke’s Rock ‘n’ Roll BBQ in Ferndale (that’s mac and cheese, pork, beans, brisket and slaw layered in a cup) or loaded macaroni and cheese from the Mac Shack food truck. More than a dozen restaurants will have food for sale.

For the libations, sample products from popular brands like George Dickel, Elijah Craig, Bulleit and Buffalo Trace, as well as old standbys like Crown Royal and Jameson. For those not into whiskey — how could you not love whiskey? — there will be Sailor Jerry rum, Finlandia vodka and craft beer, including brew from the brand new Roak Brewing Co.

Hip bars and restaurants from the area will take turns in the cocktail corner, showcasing whiskey-based drinks. Detroit’s Punch Bowl Social will be on deck at 4 p.m. Saturday mixing the Bachelor’s Bowl made with Old Forester bourbon, Pimm’s blackberry elderflower liqueur, guava yerba mate tea and lemon juice.

Come back to the cocktail corner at 6 p.m. Sunday and have a drink from one of the best whiskey bars on the east side, Butter Run Saloon. They’ll serve a Honey Run, made with Canadian whiskey and muddled lemon with honey and bitters.

All this drinking, eating and socializing will be set to a soundtrack of local bands. Friday has the most diverse line up with funk and soul band, Will Sessions; electro-dance from Tunde Olarian; pop/rock band the HandGrenades; party rockers, the Beggars; and eclectic percussive rock band, Unlimited Head.

Saturday’s musical highlights are blues/rock trio the Muggs and Americana band, American Mars. Sunday hear pop/rock from Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers, Ryan Dillaha & the Miracle Men, the Blueflowers and Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms.
