Minneapolis showman Mark Mallman will bring his piano-infused rock show to the stage of Ferndale's Pig & Whiskey festival this weekend.

Once described as "Elton Johnny Rotten," the singer/songwriter has come through town before, but this is the first time Mallman will be bringing his genre-spanning music and high-energy performance to a festival atmosphere.

His show is a bit of a romp through the last several decades of pop music, drawing influence from the late 1970s and early '80s. Mallman, who rides his keyboard like a surfboard and flails about playing very fast, says audience members who are music fans with large record collections may recognize and enjoy the varied influences that he pulls together to make his unique sound.

“I try to be the best songwriter I can, and I think the only way you can get away with standing on a keyboard and having antics is if you have really strong material, so I spend a lot of time refining and making sure that the raw material is perfect, that the songs are tight, the melodies are catchy," he said.

At his Sunday afternoon set during Pig & Whiskey, Mallman will largely play songs from his new album "The End is Not the End," which is available on all streaming services and at markmallman.com
