Grapevine: Big Sean helps donate backpacks to local kids

Grammy Award-winning rap artist Big Sean will help pass out 3,500 new backpacks to local school children Thursday afternoon at the Oak Park Office Depot. The Detroit native will personally give out colorful bags stocked with school supplies to children involved in nonprofits such as Beyond Basics, Detroit Parent Network, Big Sean’s own Sean Anderson Foundation and others.

‘Motown 25’ special pops-up as DVD box set

“Motown 25: Yesterday — Today — Forever” is being released as a 6-DVD box set on Sept. 30. The program, which originally aired in 1983, reunited the Jackson 5, The Supremes and The Miracles, and it’s where Michael Jackson debuted his moonwalk. “Motown 25” won an Emmy and a Peabody Award, but has been largely unseen for the past 20 years. Tony Hawk skates in Farmington Hills

This Saturday, professional skateboarder Tony Hawk will rip it up at Riley Skate Park in Farmington Hills. The appearance is part of the Birdhouse Summer Tour, which also includes demos by Aaron “Jaws” Homoki, Ben Raybourn, Clint Walker, David Loy, Kevin Staab and more. ■The South Haven Police Department arrested singer Jennifer Hudson’s half-brother, Stephen Angelo Simpson,Tuesday for allegedly stabbing a man. According to a CBS affiliate, the victim is suspected to be the boyfriend of Simpson’s estranged wife. Simpson has been arrested several times in the past, including a Super Bowl incident in which he assaulted his wife.

■Rock ‘n’ roll fashion designer Drew Bernstein was found dead Monday on a hiking trail in the Hollywood Hills, L.A. Weekly reports. Bernstein, who created alternative clothing lines Lip Service and Kill City, apparently committed suicide by gunshot.

■To commemorate the 20th anniversary of “Forrest Gump,” a digitally remastered version of the film will be released in IMAX theaters for one week on Sept. 5.
