Michael Stipe surprises the audience at Patti Smith concert
It may have been Patti Smith’s birthday Tuesday, but fans were gifted with a special treat at her Webster Hall concert Monday night in New York. R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe was the unannounced opening act. Stipe has rarely been seen on stage since his band’s 2011 break-up, but he did a six-song set for fans that included a few R.E.M. songs, a cover of Smith’s “Wing” and “Theme from New York, New York.”
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello engaged
The Internet nearly bust into flames about six months ago when two ridiculously attractive television actors — Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello — announced they were an item. Now the buzz is back after Manganiello, who’s known for his roles in “True Blood” as well as the stripper flick “Magic Mike,” proposed to Vergara on Christmas Day. According to reports, the private proposal took place under a palm tree at the St. Regis Hotel in Princeville, Hawaii. Vergara, star of “Modern Family” and named one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes, met Manganiello at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in May. She attended with her ex-fiance Nick Loeb. Us Weekly caught up with Loeb, who said his ex “deserves happiness.” “She is beautiful and majestic and, therefore, to be loved,” he said. “Beyond all else in life, she deserves happiness, the kind that only true love can bring.” This will be the first marriage for Manganiello, 38, and the second for Vergara, 42.
‘Housewife’ Porsha Williams arrested
Reality shows don’t cast these gals because they are well-behaved. “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Porsha Williams has another tryst with the law Monday after she was jailed for driving on a suspended license. TMZ reports that Williams was pulled over for speeding, and then booked for the suspended license. She later posted $1,726 bond and was released. She said in a statement that the reason she was speeding was to visit her grandfather who is in the hospital suffering from cancer.
■Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis and her husband, Todd Thompson, are divorcing after 11 years of marriage. The celebrity chef announced the news on her Facebook page and revealed that the pair have been separated amicably since July. They have a 6-year-old daughter.
■The music documentary “Michael Jackson: the Journey” will be released Thursday on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vimeo and other digital and on-demand platforms. The film follows the King of Pop through his life from his beginnings in Gary, Indiana, to his untimely death in 2009.
