Metheny 2015 Detroit Jazz Festival Artist-in-Residence
Pat Metheny, one of the pioneering fusion jazz artists of the '70s, has been named the Artist-in-Residence for this year's Detroit Jazz Festival. Metheny, who's earned 20 Grammys over his 40-year career, will reunite with vibraphonist Gary Burton during Jazzfest in a special quartet with Scott Colley and Antonio Sanchez. It was in Burton's band in the mid-'70s that Metheny, a native of Kansas City, found national fame. "His experimentation with sound and style — and jazz itself — truly taps into why this medium can be so moving and inspiring," said Jazzfest artistic director Chris Collins, in a statement. Metheny said "I'm honored and I look forward to to my visits to Detroit, a place with such rich music history." The guitarist/composer will also take part in educational initiatives, including mentoring young metro Detroit musicians, in the coming months. The Detroit Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival in the world, takes place over Labor Day weekend in downtown Detroit.
