West Va. Music Hall to induct MC5’s Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith

MC5 guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith will be inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame on Saturday.

His family — musician and author Patti Smith and their children, Jesse Smith and Jackson Smith — will be part of the lineup of presenters, honorees and performers.

Held at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame’s 2018 class also includes Hasil Adkins, Ann Magnuson, Frank Hutchison, The Morris Brothers and Michael W. Smith.

“He was a Detroit boy, but his roots, his connection with West Virginia, were very strong,” Patti Smith told the Charleston Gazette-Mail in a story published this week.

Fred Smith was was born in West Virginia’s Lincoln County and his family later moved to Detroit, where he was in the influential garage punk band the MC5 in the 1960s and ’70s. He died in 1994 at age 45.
