Women of Detroit techno honored by city
Just ahead of this weekend’s electronic music festival Movement, the Detroit City Council this week honored a group of women who were influential in the genre. The Spirit of Detroit Award was given to DJ Minx, Stacey Hale, Joy Santiago, Bridgette Banks, Traci of Mahogoni Music, Laura Gavoor (posthumously) and Angie Linder. “So thankful to have received the Spirit of a Detroit Award, recognizing women in techno,” DJ Minx wrote Tuesday on Facebook. The Spirit of Detroit Award is given in recognition of exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership and dedication to improving the quality of life.
Woman accuses R. Kelly of sex abuse
A woman has filed a lawsuit against R. Kelly, accusing the singer of sexual battery, knowingly infecting her with herpes and locking her in rooms for punishment, the Associated Press reports. Faith Rodgers, 20, appeared on “CBS This Morning” Tuesday and said the R&B singer required that she call him “daddy” and said she “submitted” to sex with him after he flew her to New York and he came to her hotel room. “I didn’t really say anything. I kinda just froze up,” she said on CBS. “I definitely was uncomfortable. But he has this type of, like, intimidation right off the bat. You know? So I was just waiting for it to be over.” Rodgers’ lawsuit says Kelly “mentally, sexually and verbally” abused her. Kelly has long been accused of behavior that is questionable and illegal. He has denied any wrongdoing. An appearance by Kelly at a concert in his native Chicago scheduled earlier this month was canceled after protests.
