The 2014 Run of the Dead, sponsored by the Southwest Detroit Business Association in celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, is 7 a.m.-noon Saturday at Patton Park Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere, Detroit.

Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday that honors deceased family and friends.

Competitors in the 5K and 10K races will pass gravestones, headstones, mausoleums and other burial sites at Holy Cross and Woodmere Cemeteries. Signage throughout the event will showcase noteworthy facts about some of the historic and prominent figures buried at each location. A special tribute to honor deceased loved ones will take place at the race’s conclusion.

Registration is $25 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K and includes an event bib, a commemorative T-shirt and swag bag filled with treats. Online registration ends at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Late registration is available on a limited basis at 7 a.m. Saturday for $30 and $35 respectively.
