Special offers, event for Veterans Day

In celebration of Veterans Day, several Metro Detroit places are offering veterans special deals Wednesday:

■Free admission to the Detroit Institute of Arts’ “30 Americans,” an exhibit of contemporary art by African-American artists, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Veterans must present a military I.D. 5200 Woodward, Detroit. Call (313) 833-7900.

■Free admission to the Detroit Zoo for veterans and one guest. Woodward and 10 Mile, Royal Oak.

■Free lunch to veterans and active service members at metro-area Texas Roadhouse restaurants from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Veterans, including active, retired or former U.S. military, can choose one of 10 entrees from a pre-selected list for dine-in only. Veterans must show the server proof of military service, including military ID cards, Veterans Affairs cards or discharge papers.

■ Second annual Caring for Our Homeless Veterans Benefit Run/Walk and collection drive for the Michigan Veterans Foundation will begin at 6 a.m. and end at noon Wednesday at Detroit Tough Gym, 1224 Beech. The run/walk is a 5K, 3.1 mile, route that will pass the Mariners Inn and Michigan Veterans Foundation. Participants will deliver backpacks filled with donated clothing and disposable supplies to homeless veterans along the route. Call (248) 483-5000.

Birmingham’s 220 Merrill hosts wine dinner

Wines from Celani Vineyard will be the special guest at a six-course wine dinner at 220 Merrill in Birmingham on Nov. 19. The restaurant’s owners, Denise Ilitch and Zaid Elia, will host, along with the vineyard’s owner Tom Celani.

Chef Frank Olbrantz’s fall-influenced menu includes an oyster and prawn appetizer, petit veal mignon with colcannon potatoes and smoked chocolate lava cake for dessert. Each course is paired with one of Celani’s wines.

The dinner will start at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $150 plus tax and tip. Call (248) 646-2220 to reserve a seat.
