“Downton Abbey” mania swept over the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday night as more than 1,200 fans of the Masterpiece show gathered for a sneak preview of the final season before it premieres in January.

Many were dressed in period clothing to fit right into the show that follows Robert Crawley — Great Britain’s 7th Earl of Grantham — his wife Cora, and their family and staff.

Tickets to the free screening at the 1,235-seat auditorium were snatched up weeks ago. After a costume contest and trivia contest, fans got to watch the first hour of the show’s Season 6 premiere.

Across the region, diehard “Downton” fans have been flocking to early screenings and viewing parties. A screening party at the Detroit Institute of Art’s Detroit Film Theatre earlier this week also was sold out.

“Downton Abbey” premieres Jan. 3 on Detroit Public Television.
