Now that Mother Nature has finally decided to sync up her calendar with the rest of us, we can begin shifting our cold weather gear to the back of the closet (or storage) and bring out the light and airy clothes we’ve been patiently waiting to wear.

Warmer temps equate to more time spent outdoors, and that time often stretches from day to night. Therefore, a key component to the perfect spring wardrobe is comfortable yet versatile footwear. This is wear ankle boots or booties come in.

Many think that wearing boots throughout the spring and summer is only meant for those who are festival-hopping over the next few months. I’m here to tell you, that is no longer the case. Whether you’re planning a trip to Lollapalooza or an outfit for casual Friday at work, there is a boot that you can and will rock with confidence.

The color palette

First things first: Black will need to take a back seat to lighter neutrals like tan, beige and gray. These colors go with everything in your wardrobe, including all white, denim on denim or floral prints. Looking to elongate your legs? Find a color that matches your skin tone and is your version of “nude.” Often find yourself heading out to dinner or an event after work? Light gray suede will take you through the entire day seamlessly.

Yes, light colored shoes, especially in suede, scare most people (myself included). However, a little Scotchgard or UGG Water & Stain Repellent will remove those fears. And if you’re still a little hesitant, make sure you don’t spend an exorbitant amount of money on them. Brands like Sole Society, Sam Edelman and even Toms have a great selection of suede ankle boots that are under $100 and won’t leave you heartbroken if they get a little stained.

All the trimmings

There are several cool design elements available on booties these days. My current favorite is the cutout shaft (basically a cutout of a “v” on the inner and outer ankle). Steve Madden and Jeffrey Campbell have some of the best and most affordable versions of those.

If you pick up a pair with double buckles or a little bit of fringe, you’re right on-trend. Woven leather? Consider yourself ahead of the game. If you’re like me and never understood the purpose of the dual personality open-toe bootie, the latest offerings from Dolce Vita and Charles David may make you see the light. I’ve even made a vow to try it out this season, and I think you should too.

Ultimately, as long as the cut of the boot is flattering and your feet can breathe, you’re good to go. But, most importantly, have fun with it! ‘Tis the season.
