Help celebrate Michigan through photos

The Detroit News

Third-graders from Cranbrook Schools in Bloomfield Hills were taking a tour of the state Capitol in Lansing. The docent made their day by asking them to lie on the floor to gaze up at the dome. Each gladly sprawled on the floor and looked up — right into the lens of field-trip chaperone Keith Lublin of West Bloomfield.

It’s a photo that invites a long look, with little bodies twisted every which way and each face interested and interesting. Lublin titled it “Capitol Tour from the Capitol Floor.”

We’re naming it as one of the first finalists in The Detroit News’ 10th annual Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest, which seeks images that reflect something special about our state — the people, wildlife, scenery, places and events that make it unique.

“I love this picture, too,” Lublin said. “It makes me tear up with happiness and hope for the future.”

Each Wednesday through Sept. 7, Detroit News judges will select four photos to become eligible for prizes to be awarded on Sept. 14.

Other finalists this week:

■“Expression,” by James Timmer of Troy. “I was taking photos of a large 9-point white-tailed buck when this doe came up a hill near me and stopped and started sniffing the air,” Timmer said. “I got this shot as she was in mid-sniff.”

■“Old Michigan Farm,” by Dean Teaster of Fowlerville. He drove by a beautiful old barn on Meridian Road in Williamston and found it and the cloud-filled sky “just perfect for a black and white photo.”

■ “West Coast Romance,” by Phillip DePetro of Hartland. A couple in silhouette watches the sunset at Holland State Park. “I imagine this is a story in the lives of many couples in Michigan, romantic evenings watching sunsets on the shores of a beautiful lake,” DePetro said.

Contest prizes are:

■First prize: A two-night stay for two at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, plus a 16-inch-by-20-inch framed print of your photo.

■Second prize: A waterproof GoPro HERO4 Session camera, for capturing on-the-go video and photos.

■Third prize: A $100 gift card to, where you can find hand-crafted Michigan products and more.

■Best enhanced image: A 16-inch-by-20-inch print of your photo, plus four tickets to any Emagine theater.
